Belk Inc. is expanding its Jonesville, SC e-commerce distribution and fulfillment center operations for the second time since establishing it there in 2012. The expansion, which is expected to be completed in January 2015 will add 346,000 square feet and is being financed by W.P. Carey Inc, a global net-lease REIT. The total value of the transaction is approximately $45 million, the company reported.
Belk currently has nearly 300 stores across 16 states and over $4 billion in annual revenues. E-commerce has been a core focus for growth going forward and the company is making significant investments to expand the capabilities of its belk.com website and increase online sales. The expansion to its SC distribution center facility plays a significant role in Belk’s evolving strategy, the company said. In addition to the expansion, the company is also investing in new conveyor systems, racking and automation.
“Over the past decade, e-commerce sales have grown from less than 1% to over 5% of total retail sales. Consistent with that trend, Belk continues to grow its e-commerce business and expand the capabilities of its belk.com website,” said W.P. Carey managing director Chad Edmonson.
