Chene Named Big Lots Chief Merchant As Martin Retires

Big Lots, Inc. today announced that it has appointed Richard Chene as executive vp, chief merchandising officer. He will oversee merchandising and global sourcing strategies and execution including the development and attraction of talent for the organization, the company stated.

Big Lots president and CEO David Campisi, said, in announcing the appointment, that the company’s planned enhancement of its merchandising strategy will focus on operations targeting its representative target customer, Jennifer, “and provide her with trend-right product assortments at compelling values. Rich brings a wealth of experience in merchandising-related strategies that will be directly transferable to our mission to provide her with surprises in every aisle every day. He is well known in the vendor community in many of our merchandising categories, including a multitude of home-related products used in the kitchen, food preparation, tabletop, housewares, and home textiles, along with food, consumables, and pet-related products. He is a lifelong merchant with command and a track record of getting results. We’re delighted to welcome him as a member of our executive leadership team.”

Before joining Big Lots, Chene was president of The Kitchen Collection, Inc., a subsidiary of NACCO Industries, Inc., which operates a chain of kitchenware stores in the United States that specialize in kitchen-related and food preparation products. He also has held senior merchandising positions with PETCO Animal Supplies, Sears Holdings Corp., Giant Eagle, and May Co. Department Stores. Chene replaces John Martin, who, the company reported in July, is retiring.
