Publix Super Markets Inc. continues expanding its presence in the Southeast. The company announced that it will enter the North Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island, SC market with two stores.
The company has leased a North Myrtle Beach site located in the Coastal North Town Center at Highway 17 and Moss Place that will harbor a 49,000-square-foot Publix supermarket expected to open in late 2014. The company also has leased Pawleys Island space in the Pawleys Island Plaza at Highway 17 and Petigru Drive that will accommodate a 45,000-square-foot Publix supermarket expected to open in early 2015.
“On the heels of our continued expansion in North Carolina, we are excited to offer our associates growth opportunities and bring new jobs to the area,” said Chuck Roskovich, Publix divisional vp. “We look forward to providing South Carolina residents and visitors alike with the high-quality service, products and active community involvement that Publix has become known for in our areas of operation and beyond.”
Publix entered the North Carolina market with the purchase of seven supermarkets from Bi-Low in September. Four are located in North Carolina and three in South Carolina.
In a related story, Harris-Teeter Supermarkets, which has been in more intense competition with Publix as that chain has expanded out of Florida, has announced its shareholders voted overwhelmingly to approve the previously announced agreement and plan of merger with Hornet Acquisition, Inc., and The Kroger Co.
Harris-Teeter, based in Matthews, NC, operates three stores in South Carolina and about two dozen in North Carolina. Publix, headquartererd in Lakeland, FL, operates about 50 stores in South Carolina.
