Independent We Stand, a national small business movement that advocates the importance of buying local, has announced that Trio Hardware & Paint— a Do it Best member in Plainview, NY— is the recipient of the 2013 Independent We Stand Independent Small Business of the Year Award. The family-owned hardware store has 15 employees and has been in business for 50 years.
“We love our community. They’ve been incredible to us, and we try to reciprocate to them,” said co-owner Bruce Carlow. In addition to being one of the founding members of the Plainview Chamber of Commerce, Trio sponsors the local high school robotics team, gives two scholarships yearly to a graduating male and female student, hires locally and sponsors little league and soccer teams.
“As a small business, perception on price is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome. We focus on educating consumers about the economic benefits of shopping local, and providing great customer service from knowing our customers to offering advice and our expertise,” said Todd Kirschner, co-owner.
The ten award submissions that received the highest number of public votes were deemed finalist submissions, and the winner was chosen by a panel of contest judges. As the 2013 Independent Small Business of the Year, Trio Hardware & Paint will receive prizes with a combined value of more than $15,000.
