Costco Manages Comp Gains In Retail's Tough June Friday July 6th, 2012 - 11:28AM

For June, Costco Wholesale Corp. has reported net sales of $9.18 billion, an increase of 6% from last year’s period. Comparable store sales, without including the effects of gasoline price or foreign exchange rate fluctuations, were up 3% in the United States and 8% internationally for a company average of 5%. With gasoline price and foreign exchange rate fluctuations included, Costco domestic comps gained 3% and international comps gained 2% for a company total of 3%. By product category, Costco said in a recorded conference call, soft line comps experienced a positive mid single digit increase led by small appliances and domestics while hardlines comps were positive in the low single-digit range. Food and sundries comps gained in the mid single digit range, as did fresh food. The Midwest and Northwest were Costco's best performing geographical regions in the United States. Costco currently operates 605 warehouses including 438 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, 82 in Canada, 32 in Mexico, 22 in the United Kingdom, 13 in Japan, eight in Taiwan, seven in Korea and three in Australia, it noted, as well as e-commerce web sites at www.costco.com in the U.S and at www.costco.ca in Canada. The company said it plans to open three new club stores prior to the end of its fiscal year on September 2.
