Wahl Aids In National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month Efforts

Tuesday October 8th, 2013 - 3:57PM

For October’s National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, Wahl Clipper Corp. and the Petfinder Foundation are giving thousands of shelter dogs a fresh start. In addition, Wahl and its pet adoption partner are launching the Dirty Dogs Contest, an effort that encourages dog owners to help clean out their local shelters.

Wahl is donating approximately 1,000 bottles of its new All-natural Pet Shampoo to shelters nationwide to aid with a cleanup effort designed to ensure more pet adoptions.

“We look forward to working with the Petfinder Foundation on such an important initiative,” said Shay Moeller, Wahl product manager. “As a pet industry leader, it’s our responsibility to raise awareness of this issue and help our shelters give their animals the best possible chance of being adopted.”

According to a recent Petfinder Foundation survey, three out of four dogs entering pet shelters today need grooming, but due to limited supplies and resources, only two of them will receive it. Lack of grooming is an important issue because 73% of adopters start the process online, visiting Petfinder or local animal rescue websites to view profile photos of available dogs. So unkempt dogs have a lesser chance of attracting interest.

“Grooming is important to the health of our pets, but it’s critical to the adoption of dogs who are abandoned to shelters and need new families,” said Karen Hollish, program marketing manager for Petfinder Foundation. “While there are many hurdles to dog adoption, one of the ongoing challenges rescue groups and shelters face is access to much-needed grooming supplies.”

To participate in the Dirty Dog Contest, pet owners can submit a photo of their pooches at their dirtiest via the Wahl Facebook page. The winner will receive a $5,000 grant for a favorite local shelter or rescue group. Two finalists will receive $1,000 for their favorite local shelters or rescue organizations. Wahl and Petfinder will announce which photos made the contest’s top 25 at the end of October. Then, fans can vote for their favorites dirty dog to determine the winner.

As for the photo contributors, the grand price winner receives a year's supply of Wahl pet grooming products and a $100 gift card while the second and third prize winners get a Wahl grooming kit and $50 gift card.
