Growth in online retailing continues to outpace that of store-based retailing in North America, according to a report from Internet Retailer. Its newly published 2014 Top 500 Guide noted that the 500 largest web merchants account for 87% of all e-tailing sales in the United States.

The report stated that 2013 total retail sales in the U.S. grew by 3.7%, citing U.S. Commerce Department figures, to reach $3 trillion. But it asserted that online retailing grew four times faster, reaching $263 billion, up 16.9% from the previous year. The Top 500 e-retailers posted a 17.1% year-over-year gain and accounted for a 29.4% share of all U.S. retail sales growth, the report said.

Two types of merchants stand out in the Top 500 rankings, the report noted, the 197 web-only retailers that, not counting Amazon.com, grew 21% and commanded 41.4% of the Top 500's total web sales, and the 159 retail chain sites, which grew 16.7% to $88.8 billion and accounted for nearly a third of total Top 500 growth.
