According to a survey sponsored by the National Retail Federation, a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend, up from 226 million last year. Among product categories, 20.6% of shoppers purchased home décor or home-related furnishings gifts in the timeframe, the survey indicated.
Among the 12 categories NRF assigns merchandise, home décor and home-related furnishings ranked eighth in purchasing.
Thanksgiving weekend shoppers hit the stores running, with 28% at the stores by midnight on Black Friday versus 24.4% last year.
Over the period, the average holiday shopper spent $423 this year, up from $398 last year. Total spending reached an estimated $59.1 billion, NRF stated.
