Ahold USA, in partnership with its retail divisions and its online-based food retailing service Peapod has opened its 120th pick-up points as well as a digital innovation hub in Chicago, the company noted. Peapod delivers primarily grocery products but users can purchase a limited range of housewares through the pickup and deliver service from segments such as small appliances, kitchen gadgets, cookware and floor care, and Ahold USA pointed out that it continues to accelerate its online growth.
“The retail world is changing fast and fulfilling the needs of the connected customer is a crucial part of future growth,” James McCann, Ahold USA COO, said in announcing the online moves. He asserted that adding the reaching 120 pick-up locations, “compared to eight only a year ago, represents great momentum and solid proof of our successful omnichannel execution. Our combination of in-store shopping, home delivery and pick-up points is key to delivering on Ahold’s Reshaping Retail ambitions.’’
Launched in 2012, Ahold pick-up points in the United States have been established for Stop & Shop, Giant Landover and Giant Carlisle supermarkets, the company pointed out, which are located in the northeastern part of the country. Peapod’s deliver service operates from Massachusetts south to Virginia in the East, but also in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
To further its online initiatives, Peapod has opened what it terms a digital innovation center in Chicago. The Peapod Propulsion Labs will serve as Ahold USA’s center of development excellence focused on driving the kind of innovation that is powering the growth of E-commerce, the company stated.
Jan van Dam, executive vp/E-commerce and Supply Chain, Ahold USA, added, “There is healthy competition for online talent and we want to attract that talent to fuel our ambitious growth plans. A highly inspired workplace in Chicago is a good start in getting key online talent into our company. Peapod Propulsion Labs is designed to leverage Peapod’s E-commerce expertise across our organization as we continue to take steps to help customers shop where they want, how they want and when they want.”
