For the five-week period ended April 5, Stein Mart, Inc. posted total sales of $136.3 million versus $135.4 million for the five-week period ended April 6, 2013. Comparable store sales for the fiscal March period increased 0.9% year over year, the company reported.
Stein Mart stated that March sales were depressed by the shift of pre-Easter selling to April this year and by cooler than normal temperatures in many parts of the country early in the month. On a geographic basis, Florida and the Southeast had solid comparable store sales increases, while Texas, the Gulf States and the Northeast were challenged, the company asserted.
At the end of March, Stein Mart operated 263 stores versus 262 stores at month’s end last year, it noted. The company opened one store in Las Vegas during March and relocated two stores, one in Hendersonville, NC and one in Overland Park, KS.
