Walgreens has posted a September sales gain of 8% to $5.92 billion versus the month a year ago. The company reported that total front-end sales, including revenues from home goods and other general merchandise, advanced 4.1% for the month year-over-year while comparable store front-end sales increased 2.9%.
Customer traffic in comparable stores decreased 0.8%, according to Walgreens, but basket size increased 3.7%.
September pharmacy sales increased by 10.4%, while comparable store pharmacy sales increased 10.2%, or 7.3% when calendar day-shift adjusted, the company noted.
In September, Walgreens opened 17 stores, including eight relocations, and closed one. At month’s end, it operated 8,590 locations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands including 8,123 drugstores, 77 more than a year ago, the company stated. Walgreens also operates infusion and respiratory services facilities, specialty pharmacies and mail service facilities as well as a Take Care Health Systems subsidiary managing more than 700 in-store convenient care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers.
