At the company’s annual meeting, Dick Boer, Ahold CEO, stated that company initiatives in the United States will emphasize omnichannel operations as well as better satisfying evolving consumer preferences, including those for locally produced products. In addition, the company announced, according to published reports, Amy Hahn has joined Ahold USA to fill the newly created position of senior vp/marketing after a 20-year career with The Hershey Co.
Speaking at the General Meeting of Shareholders in the Netherlands, Boer said Ahold will operate at least 200 U.S. pick-up points for its online-based Peapod operation by the end of this year. The company is opening a new warehouse in New Jersey during the summer that will enable Peapod to double its capacity in 2014 and to pursue growth opportunities in the New York Metro area, it asserted.
Boer went on to note that the company’s Giant Landover division is building a 100,000-square-foot urban greenhouse in the Washington, DC, area, the largest of its kind in the world, that will enable the company to deliver fresh, locally grown and sustainable produce throughout the year while also creating jobs and benefiting the local economy.
