Albertsons is partnering with Takeoff Technologies to pilot an artificial intelligence-enabled micro-fulfillment center, to become the first national grocer to implement automated e-commerce fulfillment.
The company will pilot Takeoff’s automated fulfillment center in an existing store and replenish the system daily. Customers will enter an order using Albertson’s existing e-commerce interface. On receiving the order, the Takeoff system will then take over the fulfillment process, using artificial intelligence-enhanced technology and a series of totes and conveyors to deliver the items to a store employee, who will finish preparing the order. Albertson’s stated that a benefit the system conveys is reducing the processing time necessary per order.
“Investing in e-commerce directly benefits our customers, and anything that we can do to simplify their grocery shopping experience to save valuable time is a win,” said Narayan Iyengar, svp/digital and e-commerce at Albertsons. “While our partnership with Takeoff Technologies will streamline e-commerce fulfillment and improve our efficiencies, we’re excited that Takeoff’s AI solution will make it even easier for customers to get their groceries how and when they want. This is a major step in our commitment to being a customer-centric player in the digital food and wellness ecosystem.”
