In the next upgrade to its mobile device operating system, Apple will expand the functionality of its automated payment systems.
The iOS 10 version of its operating system, which the company previewed this week, will include new Apple Pay functionality, allowing it to be used to make secure and private purchases on participating websites using the Safari browser.
Previously, consumers could only use Apple Pay to purchase in-stores and within apps. The Apple Pay initiative should make it more competitive with the leading third party online payment system, PayPal.
The iOS 10 upgrade will be generally available to Apple device users in the fall, the company noted.
