For the fiscal month of August, Costco reported net sales of $13.56 billion versus $11.79 billion for the period a year prior.
Comparable sales, without the effects of gasoline price and foreign exchange volatility, were up 14.5% company wide with the U.S. up 14.3%, Canada up 15% and international up $15.4%, versus August 2019. E-commerce comps advanced 101.6% in the month year over year.
Shopper frequency gained 3.1% during the month in the U.S., the company noted in a conference call. Strongest sales regions year over year were the Northeast, Southeast and Texas.
Hardline comps increased in the mid-teens with small appliances, jewelry and apparel leading. Hardlines comps advanced in the high 20s with major appliances, including electronics, garden and sporting goods strong. Food and sundries comps increased in the mid-teens and those for fresh food increased in the low 20s.
