Backstage Gets The Spotlight As Macy’s Debuts Outlet Concept

Macy’s Backstage debuts today, September 2, in three simultaneous openings across the eastern end of the New York City metro area. The new outlet store concept will greet consumers in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island, the retailer announced.

The first stores are premiering in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, ElmhurstQueens, and MelvilleLong Island. Macy’s plans to open three additional Backstage stores before year’s end, the company reported, including a location in New Hyde Park, on Long Island, which will debut on September 19. Macy’s slated stores in the Fordham section of the Bronx and Essex Green, NJ, for opening late this fall.

Backstage, according to the company, will combine the Macy’s department store brand mix with the fun of bargain shopping at an outlet. The retailer characterized Backstage as an entertaining cross between a department store and an outlet that caters to shoppers’ fashion whims as it fuels their thrill of the treasure hunt. Major categories in the outlet’s assortment include home, cosmetics, gifts, activewear and jewelry. Center Stage is a special dedicated space in the store where Macy’s will showcase trend, theme and style propositions to the Backstage shopper.

As conceived, the new Macy’s Backstage format will range in size from 25,000 to 35,000 square feet. Celebrity brands will make special appearances in the product mix, Macy’s noted, but the focus will be on items that reflect a season past the department store mix.
