Belk Prepares New Flagship Store In Mobile As Potential Sale Looms

After acquiring a former Sears location, Belk has announced that it will open a new 230,000 square foot flagship store at The Shoppes at Bel Air to serve the greater Mobile, AL, region. The department store operator set the start of store construction for January 2016, with a completion slated for that fall.

The new Belk flagship will offer an expanded selection of fashion and premium brand assortments, the company stated. The core assortment will include ladies apparel and kids on the first floor, and men’s and home on the second.

Two current Belk stores in the area, at Bel Air Colonial Mall and Springdale Mall, will continue operating until the new store opens in the fall of 2016, the company noted. Belk has served the Mobile and Gulf Coast communities since 2005, and operates several stores including Mobile, Pensacola, Gautier, Gulfport, and Biloxi locations.

“We are excited to build a premier Belk flagship store in Mobile, Alabama to create the ultimate shopping experience for our customers in this region,” said David Luoma, chairman, Belk western division. “This store will showcase the best of Belk. We will offer broad assortments of top brands for the entire family. This project also represents Belk’s ongoing deep commitment to our customers and the Mobile community.”

The Charlotte Observer has reported that Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm, is preparing a $3.5 billion bid to acquire Belk, which has more than 300 stores in 16 states.
