Costco Enjoys October Sales Momentum

October saw Costco continue its strong recent sales momentum.

For the fiscal month of October, Costco posted net sales of $13.82 billion, up 15.9% from the period in 2019.

With the effects of gasoline price and foreign exchange rate changes excluded, the company reported, comparable sales in the United States were up 16.4% in the month year over year while those in Canada increased 15.2% and those in other international markets increased 19% for a companywide total advance of 16.5%. E-commerce comps gained 91% versus October 2019.

Company traffic and average transaction were both up, Costco noted.

On a regional basis in October, U.S. sales were strongest in the Northeast, Southeast and Texas, Costco stated in a conference call. As for merchandising categories, softlines comps were up in the mid-teens on a percentage basis year over year with home furnishings, housewares and small appliances leading. Hardlines comps were positive in the mid-20s, with strength in major appliances, including electronics, garden and sporting goods. Food and sundries comps were positive in the low 20s while fresh foods comps were up in the mid 20s.
