For the five weeks ended October 6, Costco posted a comparable sales gain of 5.6% from the period a year earlier with the effects of changes in fuel and foreign exchange prices excluded.
Without fuel and foreign exchange effects, comps gained 5.7% in the U.S. year over year, 4.5% in Canada and 5.9% in other international markets, while e-commerce comps increased 18.5%.
Net sales increased 5.6% to $14.41 billion in the period versus the fiscal September 2018 month.
In a conference call, Costco stated that the strongest U.S. sales results came from the Bay Area in California, San Diego and Los Angeles. In terms of merchandise categories, softlines comps gained in the low single digits with home furnishings, kiosks and housewares leading. Hardlines comps gained in the high single digits, while those for food and sundries advanced in the mid single digits and those for fresh foods increased in the mid single digits.
