For the five week fiscal month of June, Costco reported net sales of $16.18 billion, up 11.1% from the period a year earlier.
With the effects of changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange excluded, comparable sales increased 13.6% in the United States year over year, 12.2% in Canada and 22.1% in other international markets for a company total of 14.4%. E-commerce comps advanced 86.7%.
Year over year, store traffic gained 0.4% in the U.S., the first increase since March, the company noted in a conference call.
Costco stated in the call that the Southeast, Texas and Northeast were the best performing U.S. sales regions. As for merchandise categories, Softlines comps were positive in the mid teens, with home furnishings and small appliances strong, and apparel making gains. Hardline comps were up in the low 20% range, with major appliances, including consumer electronics, hardware and health and beauty strong. Food & Sundries comps were positive high teens while fresh food comps advanced in the mid 20% range.
