Second quarter sales at Dollar Tree were up as the company made strong gains in same-store sales and earnings per share.
For the quarter ended August 4, consolidated net sales were up 4.6% to $5.53 billion. Enterprise same-store sales increased 1.8%, with same-store sales up 3.7% at Dollar Tree locations and flat for stores under the Family Dollar banner.
Net income was $273.9 million, up from net income of $233.8 million in the comparable quarter the previous year. Diluted earnings per share were $1.15 compared with $0.98 in the same quarter in 2017.
During the quarter, the company opened its 15,000th store and its 23rd distribution center.
For the first six months of 2018, consolidated net sales were 4.8% to $11.08 billion. Enterprise same-store sales were up 1.6% with comparable sales at Dollar Tree stores up 3.9% but down 0.5% at stores under the Family Dollar banner.
