In an eMarketer forecast of the top 10 U.S. companies ranked by retail e-commerce sales, Amazon.com gained market share year over year, with its share now exceeding 40%.
In the forecast for 2017, Amazon’s market share comes in at 43.5%, up from 38.1% in 2016. Amazon sales are six times those of the second retailer on the list, eBay, according to eMarketer.
Overall, eMarketer estimated retail e-commerce sales in the U.S. would increase by 15.8% to reach $452.8 billion by the end of 2017. E-commerce would constitute 9% of total retail outlays, the company noted.
The e-commerce market share leaders following Amazon are eBay, at 6.8%, and Walmart, at 3.6%. Apple, according to eMarketer, comes in fourth place with a 3.6% market share. Trailing with a 1.5% market share or less are, in order, Home Depot, Best Buy, Macy’s, Wayfair, Costco and QVC. Home Depot, Best Buy and Wayfair slightly improved their market share position versus last year, while Macy’s and Costco came in flat and QVC was down slightly.
