LAS VEGAS— The National Hardware Show has awarded top honors to four products at the ninth annual Homewares Show Awards. The program, for which HOMEWORLD BUSINESS® is a sponsor, recognizes innovation in home and housewares products that are exhibited during the show.
This year’s Homewares Show Awards winners are:
• Gold Award: Northern Response International, ODii The Ultimate Grab-It Gadget.
• Silver Award: BakerStone Intl., BakerStone Pizza Oven Box.
• Bronze Award: Cord Buddy, Inc., Cord Buddy.
• Honorable Mention: DMD Products, Love Handle Smartphone Grips.
The Homewares Show Awards program evaluates entries based on aesthetics, differentiation/uniqueness, whether they fill consumer needs, overall value and packaging/merchandising support.
This year’s entries were judged by a panel of merchants representing the array of retail channels that attend the National Hardware Show: Terry Shearer, president of The Organizing Store; Deborah Shearer, co-founder and CEO of The Organizing Store; Carol Ai Mai, vp/City Mill; Marvin Gingrich, promotions manager, Home Hardware; Jay Fording, product design manager, Lowe’s; Steve Domingues, merchandise manager, Orchard Supply Hardware; Tony Luckie, executive director, Storage Sources Group; and John Rij, senior category manager, Wakefern.
“With the Homewares Show Awards, we realized there was a real opportunity to recognize the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit that is still alive and well in this industry,” said Peter Giannetti, HomeWorld Business editor-in-chief. “In many ways it is that spirit that is the lifeblood of this business, and we are honored to work with the National Hardware Show to help connect retailers with these innovative new products.”
The gold prize winning ODii Ultimate Grab-It Gadget by Northern Response is a 3-in-1 grabbing tool. It features a flexible, telescopic claw that extends 18 inches, a flexible, telescopic, detachable magnet that extends 25 inches and it lifts up to 6 pounds. The tool also includes a detachable LED light and is designed to fit in the glove compartment of a vehicle, measuring 12 inches long when folded up. It has an MSRP of $24.99.
Howard Liberman, Northern
Response International’s national account manager, accepted the Gold Award. He said that the company helps inventors go to market with their inventions, like the ODii grabbing tool.
He added that the company helps inventors to develop the product, work on the packaging and promotions, run direct response TV commercials, create the media spots and bring the product to retail.
“That’s in essence what we’ve done with the ODii. We worked with the inventor and today we have distribution in several countries around the world. At the show, we had QVC commit to putting the product on in the fourth quarter. We also had Office Depot, Home Depot, Costco and a myriad of other retailers coming by and saying, ‘It’s a really innovative product, we see an opportunity for it and we’re going with it,’” he said.
When it came to winning the Gold Award, Liberman said, “I was completely incredulous. I didn’t think we really had a chance after looking at some of the competition and some of the tremendously innovative products here. I knew the ODii was a great product but I really didn’t know we would win first prize, and it really is an honor and a privilege. It’s just wonderful that we’re here doing this.”
Taking home the Silver Award was the BakerStone Pizza Oven Box. The patent-pending design raises temperatures of outdoor grills to that of a real wood burning pizza oven, the company said. It combines a stone baking chamber with an enameled steel housing, creating an airflow system, which enhances the convection, conductive and radiant heat. It has an MSRP of $129.
The Bronze Award was presented to Cord Buddy Inc. for its Cord Buddy. The product was developed to secure charging cords for cell phones, laptops, tablets, blue tooth devices and more. Cord Buddy is designed to “keep your cord off the floor,” the company said. It has an MSRP of $8.95 and $19.95, dependent on size.
This year’s Honorable Mention award went to DMD Products for its Love Handle smartphone grips. The design is a universal grip for any phone or phone case. It features a strong 3M adhesive and offers extended one-handed screen reach and a secure grip for easy photos. It has an MSRP of $7.95.
