Ikea Expands California Renewable Energy Project

To advance a renewable energy commitment, Ikea plans to add biogas-powered fuel cell systems at several of its California stores.

Last year, the company completed a fuel cell system installation at its Emeryville location, one of two Ikea stores in the San Francisco area. A plan to expand its fuel cell project to 1.3 megawatts includes installing systems at the company’s other San Francisco-area store in East Palo Alto as well as three Southern California stores in Costa Mesa, Covina and San Diego. The plan calls for having the fuel cell systems installed and operating by this fall, pending permits.

“Based on the success of the system installed last year in Emeryville, we are excited about further increasing our renewable portfolio with four more fuel cell projects,” said Ikea U.S. president Lars Petersson. “Fuel cells represent another way we can contribute to our goal of generating renewable energy equal to the amount of power we consume worldwide.”
