Ikea is launching a new social entrepreneurship program around World Refugee Day, June 20, based on the Tilltalande collection, which offers rugs and decorative pillows made in collaboration with the Jordan River Foundation and women artisans.
The artisans include Jordanian locals and refugees escaping the warfare in Syria.
Over the past four years, Ikea noted, the company has been collaborating with social entrepreneurs around the world as a way to establish sustainable social changes by creating jobs. Tilltalande is Ikea’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis. The women benefit from gaining a job and a regular income, and Ikea benefits from getting to tap into the artisans’ unique skills, the retailer noted.
Ikea’s Brooklyn store will offer the new, limited edition collection exclusively.
