J.C. Penney has decided to close its Manhattan Mall location in New York’s Herald Square.
The store opened in July 2009 with the company making a big splash of its debut, but it faced some pushback from the New York fashion press who loudly wondered why a middle-of-the-road fashion retailer would take on Manhattan. Nonetheless, the store helped support Herald Square’s development as a value shopping destination in a city where reasonable prices have to be hunted.
J.C. Penney also has added the company’s store in Brooklyn’s Kings Plaza mall to its list of closings. The company noted that, before the two New York City store closures it revealed on July 7, it acknowledged 147 stores closures on June 17 and 13 on June 22.
J.C. Penney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-May.
