U.S. retail sales in January were up slightly over December but showed solid year-over-year gains, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Retail and food service sales for the first month of 2016 were $449.9 billion, up 0.2% from December 2015 and up 3.4% when compared to January of 2015.
Total sales for the November 2015 through January 2016 period were up 2.5% from the same period a year earlier.
Sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores were up 9.1% from January 2015 and non-store retailers were up 8.7% over the same time period.
On a year-over-year comparison basis, January sales at general merchandise stores were up 0.9%, department stores were down 3.8%, electronics and appliance stores were down 4.2%, furniture and home stores down 4.2% while sales at health and personal care stores were up 3.5%.
