Kmart Developing Liquidation Merchandise Operation

Kmart is adding an off-price, treasure-hunt element to its business. Kmart’s strategic merchandising group said that it is purchasing the inventory of liquidated companies and seeking other opportunistic situations to provide customers with deep, short-term discounts.

The idea, the retailer stated, is to make shopping more fun as it offers customers unique bargains.

The deals will emerge in store, at Kmart.com and via the Kmart app with an initial effort focused on outdoor cookers and smokers as well as outdoor and hand-held lighting manufactured by The Brinkmann Corp. Kmart plans to launch the deal merchandise as Bluelight Specials at closeout prices. Brinkmann operations, including its Malibu Lighting subsidiary, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October of last year after a break with Home Depot.

Kmart offers Bluelight Specials every day via store, online and mobile selling channels. Show Your Way loyalty program members who download the Kmart app can receive real-time push notifications announcing Bluelight Specials exclusive to Kmart.com.

“The path to making Kmart great again starts with sourcing truly brag-worthy deals,” said Kmart president Alasdair James. “Just as when we brought back Bluelight Specials last year, we continue to find innovative ways to provide our Shop Your Way members with an extreme value proposition that can only be found at Kmart.”
