Today, Ikea announced that it has hired contractors for construction of its future Miami-Dade store in Sweetwater, FL. A building permit is pending, the company said, but initiation of the construction process keeps the store on track for a groundbreaking within the next two months and an opening in Summer 2014.
The new store will increase Ikea’s presence in South Florida. Ikea stores also operate stores in Orlando and Tampa.
For the Miami-area product, the environmentally conscious retailer has chosen one of the nation’s largest construction management firms, Balfour Beatty Construction, to oversee the project. The company has made the Engineering News-Record list as a Top 10 Green Builder. Balfour Beatty has deep roots in Florida since its 1933 establishment and has been recognized as one of FORTUNE magazine’s Best Places to Work, Ikea added. Other Florida firms involved with the Ikea Sweetwater project include: Kimley-Horn and Associates for civil engineering, ATC Associates for geotechnical services, GFA International, Inc. for testing and inspection services, Holland & Knight for local land use counsel, The Goldstein Environmental Law Firm for Brownfield expertise, The Shopping Center Group real estate brokerage for site selection support and Procacci Development Corp. for selling the land. Atlanta-based GreenbergFarrow is the project architect.
IKEA Miami will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 room settings, three model home interiors and a supervised children’s play area as well as a 500-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates alongside American dishes.
