Macy’s Adds Two Stores To Backstage Off-Price Launch

Macy’s has added two more pilot store locations in metro New York City for the upcoming launch of Macy’s Backstage, an off-price business that the retailer said is one of the company’s key growth initiatives.

The additional pilot locations are: Fordham Place, 400 East Fordham Road, The Bronx, NY, and Essex Green Shopping Center, West Orange, NJ.

Together with the four initial pilot locations announced last month, the two additional stores will bring to six the total number of Macy’s Backstage for the test launch. All are expected to open in fall 2015 and average about 30,000 square feet. The four previously announced pilot locations are: Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY, Queens Place, Elmhurst (Queens), NY, Lake Success Shopping Center, New Hyde Park, NY, and Melville Mall, Huntington, NY.

At Essex Green, an existing Macy’s store will be converted to Macy’s Backstage. The Macy’s Essex Green store will begin a final clearance sale June 14, which is expected to conclude in late July or early August. It will close for remodeling before opening as Macy’s Backstage in about one-half of the existing space.

The Macy’s Backstage format will feature a range of merchandise including clearance goods from Macy’s stores, as well as special buys from fashion brands, often between 20% to 80% off of original and comparable prices for similar merchandise, said the retailer.
