Meijer Opens Five New Supercenters

Meijer has opened five new supercenters across the midwestern U.S., noted Meijer president and CEO Rick Keyes.

The stores opened in Manitowoc, WI, Sycamore, IL, Bad Axe, MI, and Brimfield and Lorain, OH. At 159,000 square feet each, the stores offer a state-of-the-art shopping experience, providing customers multiple ways to shop in a specialty store environment.

The company has introduced various digital shopping solutions that it anticipate will be as popular at the new stores as they have been across the Midwest. Customer use of Shop & Scan, which allows shoppers to scan barcodes via a mobile app and bag their items as they shop, has made checkout easier, while Meijer home delivery and pickup services have helped encourage social distancing in communities across the Midwest, Meijer noted.

Although they will stock more than 600 varieties of farm-fresh produce, organic items, and a full-service meat department, the company stated that the new stores also provides pharmacy and general merchandise items more often found at specialty retailers in beauty care, a baby department, a pet department, and an apparel presentation.

Meijer pointed out that the new stores are operating under adjusted hours and maintaining strict coronavirus safety, with safety decals on sales floors where customers typically gather and protective plexiglass shields at every checkout station. Also, team members are receiving daily health screenings and temperature checks. Meijer recommends that employees and customers wear masks in its stores.

“These new stores reinforce our ongoing commitment to serving the needs of communities at a time when everyone is looking for a one-stop shopping experience,” Keyes said. “We look forward to providing our customers with fresh options and innovative ways to shop so they can get the items they need while keeping their families safe. Throughout the past few months, our Meijer team members have worked diligently to prepare these new stores amid unprecedented challenges, and for that we are all proud and inspired. Our store teams are ready to keep our stores stocked and provide the cleanest shopping environment possible as we work together in the new communities that have welcomed us.”
