Electric floor care continues to see solid growth with the stick and robotic segments driving the category, according to figures from The NPD Group.
Covering a 12 month period ending March 2019, stick and robotic vacuums accounted for a combined $1.5 billion in sales. Consumers purchased 6.3 million stick vacs (+12%) accounting for $840 million in sales (+22%) while 3.4 million (+56%) robotic vacs were sold accounting for $660 million (+34%) in sales.
“The electric floor care market has evolved as a result of product innovation and changes in cleaning behaviors,” said Joe Derochowski, home industry advisor with NPD. “Robotic and stick vacuums are addressing the core needs of today’s consumer and finding new ways to address their floor care pain points.”
Upright vacuums remain the largest segment in electric floor care, but sales have remained relatively stagnant. For the 12 month period ending March 2019, upright unit sales were down 1% to 13.3 million units while dollar sales fell 2% to $1.3 billion.
