Foot traffic data from market research firm Placer.ai suggests that Walmart may be getting ready to reveal some good fourth quarter financial results.
At Walmart supercenters, Placer.ai maintained, monthly foot traffic in November, December and January was significantly higher than that in the same months during the two years prior. Overall visit growth was 3% in 2019/20 compared to the same three-month period in 2018/19.
Compared to an established baseline for the period from January 2017 through January 2020, visits in November and December 2019 were 8.9% and 22% above the average respectively, with January 2020 visits coming in 6% below. In the previous year, visits were 4.3% and 21.3% above for November and December 2018, and 10.1% below in January 2019.
Sam’s Club had a pretty good run as well in the time period, the company indicated. Although year-over-year traffic slipped slightly in December 2019, Sam’s Club had strong November 2019 and January 2020 store visit gains. November 2019 saw visits up 8.8% above the baseline, besting 2018’s mark of 0.4% below, while January 2020 visits were 4.8% below the baseline, better than the previous year’s 9.5% below, Placer pointed out.
Walmart plans to release its fourth quarter earnings on February 18.
