Report: Amazon Eying Virginia, New York For Split HQ2

Days after a published report indicated that Amazon was on the verge of choosing Crystal City, VA, as the home for its second headquarters, news that the e-commerce giant is also looking at a second location has surfaced.

Several reports indicated that Long Island City, NY, may serve as a second home for Amazon’s HQ2. According to a report in the New York Times, Amazon is said to be finalizing plans to have 50,000 employees split between New York and Virginia.

Amazon has not commented on any reports regarding the location of its second headquarters.

The Times said Amazon officials have met recently with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio about bringing its second headquarters to the Empire State.

Long Island City is located in the Borough of Queens and sits along the East River. In recent years, that area has redeveloped its industrial areas and has seen the construction of numerous high-rises. The area is also a short subway ride from Manhattan as is in close proximity to LaGuardia and JFK International airports.

More than a year ago, Amazon said it had a need for a second U.S. headquarters as it was growing faster than it could hire in its hometown Seattle. Initial plans called for the company to invest $5 billion over two decades for a second headquarters that included the hiring of 50,000 full-time employees.
