Amazon.com may soon take another step into the grocery store business and, according to a report by the Wall St. Journal, is planning to open “dozens of stores” in several major U.S. cities.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, the parent company of Whole Foods has plans to open a new grocery store in Los Angeles by the end of 2019. The report also noted that Amazon has signed leases for at least two other grocery locations, but the report did not offer specifics on where the stores would call home.
While it is believed that the new stores would differ from Whole Foods, it is unclear on what the focus of the new store would be and how it would be branded.
Amazon is also eying cities including San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. as locations for stores under its new grocery store concept.
