Walmart is taking on Home Depot and Lowe’s by kicking off spring with its largest outdoor living, lawn and garden event of the year, one that features what what the retailer termed Black Friday-like prices. At a time when the home center operators are becoming more active in non-core categories such as cleaning, home environment, portable lighting and even gifts, Walmart is countering with a major promotion that kicks off tomorrow and continues through March 29.
The Walmart Spring Savings Event will provide its lowest prices of the season on more than 60 outdoor essentials, the retailer stated.
Walmart pointed out that it has nearly twice as many locations versus the leading home improvement store, so it can conveniently provide more shoppers with discounts such as red, black or brown mulch at $1.97 per bag. Walmart also is cutting prices on lawn mowers and grills from Murray, Snapper, Weber and Char-Broil, among others. In announcing the promotion, Walmart emphasized that it has the largest selection of lawn mowers and grills under $200 among major retailers.
“Nobody does Black Friday better than Walmart, and we’re bringing that same philosophy to our new outdoor living, lawn and garden event by offering incredibly low prices on the products our customers are looking for,” Michelle Gloeckler, senior vp/home, Walmart U.S., said in announcing the Spring Savings Event. “Given the extreme winter many of our customers experienced, we know they are preparing to restore their gardens and outdoor living spaces. This event will help them save money while they transition into the new season.”
