As part of its grooming and facial hair promotional tour, Wahl has identified Washington, D.C. as the most whisker-worthy place to live, based on the company’s annual study of the most facial hair-friendly places in the U.S.
The company said that the city’s jump in rank (it didn’t make the top 20 last year) can be attributed to the influence of its pro baseball team, the Washington Nationals. According to Wahl, last fall, the team led the league in many statistical categories, including facial hair.
This influence also led to Wahl to embark on a new promotion this summer. It will be sponsoring the beard of the Washington National’s starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez. Wahl stated that the sponsorship terms state that Gonzalez agrees to keep his beard well-groomed and conditioned and any reference to his beard must be preceded with “sponsored, or brought to you, by Wahl.”
“When you’re in the business of celebrating great facial hair like we are, it helps to have a compass,” said Steven Yde, divisional vp/marketing, Wahl. “Identifying the top facial hair friendly city helps us to find and sponsor anti-clean-shaven ambassadors like Gio.”
Wahl said that over the next four months, it will be visiting the 10 cities it named as the most-facial hair friendly. The annual trip involves a 30-foot mobile barbershop and team of master barbers offering men free trims in support of the Zero foundation, which supports the fight against prostate cancer.
During this promotional trek, Wahl will invite consumers to enter its “Man of the Year” contest, which awards one winner a grand prize of $1,500 and placement in a national Wahl ad. The contest runs through October 2.
