Walgreen Posts December Front End Comp Gains

In December, Walgreen Co. reported a sales increase of 10.2% to $7.92 billion from the fiscal 2014 month. Total front-end sales, including general merchandise such as home goods, increased 3.5% year over year while comparable store front-end sales increased 2.6%.

Customer traffic in comparable stores increased 0.3% while basket size gained 2.3%, the company announced.

Sales in comparable stores, including pharmacy results, advanced by 9.2% in December, the company stated.

Walgreen noted that it opened four stores during December and closed four.

The company maintained that it operated 8,330 locations as of December 31 in all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, including 8,229 drug stores, 29 more than a year earlier, with 10 net stores acquired over the past 12 months. Walgreen also operates infusion and respiratory services facilities, specialty pharmacies and mail service facilities, as well as e-commerce websites Walgreens.com, drugstore.com, Beauty.com, SkinStore.com and VisionDirect.com. The company also manages more than 400 Healthcare Clinic and provider practice locations around the U.S.
