Walgreen’s December Front End Sales Get Holiday Boost

In December, Walgreens generated sales of $7.2 billion, up 7.2% from the month in fiscal 2013, according to the drug store retailer. Total front-end sales, including general merchandise such as home goods, increased 4% compared to December 2012 while comparable store front-end sales gained 2.5%, it maintained.

Customer traffic in comparable stores slipped by 1.3% and basket size increased 3.8%, the company noted.

Overall store comp sales advanced 6.1% in December, Walgreens related. December pharmacy sales increased by 10.2%, while comparable store pharmacy sales gained 9%.

Walgreens stated that it opened opened five stores during December, including one relocation, acquired three and closed six. As of December 31, Walgreens operated 8,674 locations in all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Of the total, 8,200 were drugstores, 139 more than a year ago including 62 net units acquired over the past 12 months. Walgreens also operates infusion and respiratory services facilities, specialty pharmacies and mail service facilities as well as, under its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary, managing more than 750 in-store convenient care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers, the company pointed out.
