Walgreens Q1 Comps Gain Although Momentum Slowed In November

For the quarter ended November 30, Walgreens total sales were $19.59 billion, up 6.8% from last year’s period. Comparable store sales, including pharmacy revenues, increased 5.8% in the quarter year over year as front-end comps, including results from general merchandise such as home goods, gained 1.5%.

Walgreens posted November sales of $6.36 billion, up 4.9% for the month in fiscal 2014. Front end comps increased 0.8% as comparable store customer traffic decreased 3.3% and basket size increased 4.1%, the company stated. November total store comps, including pharmacy results, increased by 4.5%.

On November 30, Walgreens operated 8,330 locations in all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands including 8,229 drugstores. The drug store total included 30 more units than Walgreens operated a year ago, including 13 net stores acquired over the past 12 months. The company also operates infusion and respiratory services facilities, specialty pharmacies, mail service facilities and more than 400 Healthcare Clinic and provider practice locations around the U.S. as well as Walgreens.com, drugstore.com, Beauty.com, SkinStore.com and VisionDirect.com.
