Walgreens Reports 8% July Sales Gain

Walgreens total front-end sales, including general merchandise such as home goods, increased 3.6% in July, the company announced, versus July in fiscal 2012 when comparable store front-end sales increased 2.3%. Overall, July sales increased 8% to $6.03 billion year over year, Walgreens stated.

Customer traffic in comp stores slipped1.2% while basket size increased 3.5%, according the the company.

July pharmacy sales increased by 9.9% as comparable store pharmacy sales gained 8.8% or a calendar day-shift adjusted 6.6%. Pharmacy sales accounted for 64.6% of total July sales, the company noted.

Overall, sales in comparable stores increased by 6.3% in July. Calendar day shifts positively impacted total comparable sales by 1.4 percentage points, while generic drug introductions over the past 12 months negatively impacted total comparable sales by 1.8 percentage points.

As of July 31, the company related, Walgreens operated 8,571 locations in all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. That included 8,105 drugstores, 184 more than a year earlier, including 67 net stores acquired over the last 12 months. Walgreens also operates infusion and respiratory services facilities, specialty pharmacies and mail service facilities. Its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary operates more than 700 in-store convenient care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers, Walgreens added.
