As Walmart brings grocery pickup and delivery services to its store network, the retailer is also testing new capabilities such as self-driving cars. A new pilot program is now kicking off with autonomous vehicle company, Gatik.
The company noted that it has been developing a few pilot projects with self-driving car companies that include both customer delivery as well as transporting goods between retail locations.
In March, Arkansas passed legislation allowing for autonomous vehicles to operate in the state. With the help of Gatik, Walmart is testing an autonomous vehicle for grocery delivery services, moving customer orders on a two-mile route in Bentonville between two of its stores.
The company said it aims to learn more about the logistics of adding autonomous vehicles into its online grocery ecosystem, operation process changes and more opportunities to incorporate this emerging technology.
