Walmart will require all customers to wear a face covering as of Monday, July 20, at both namesake stores and Sam’s Club locations.
Dacona Smith, COO, Walmart U.S., and Lance de la Rosa, COO, Sam’s Club, stated jointly that about 65% of Walmart’s more than 5,000 stores and clubs are located in areas where there is some form of government mandate on face coverings. The decision will help bring consistency to company policy across stores and clubs, they noted.
Walmart stores will post signage up front informing shoppers of the policy. The company has established the role of Health Ambassador, and employees with the designation will take a position near store entrances to remind those without a mask of the new requirements. Health Ambassadors, identified by their black polo shirts, will receive special training to help in their role. The ambassadors will work with customers who appear at stores without face coverings to address those occurrences, with Walmart currently considering how to do so.
To help ensure consistency in executing the new process, all stores will operate with a single entrance.
At Sam’s Clubs, associates at the entrance will follow the same process with members, politely reminding them of the requirement to wear a face covering while shopping. Each Sam’s Club will offer complimentary masks to those members who don’t have one, or members can purchase masks at the location.
