Wegmans will invest $175 million to establish a full-service, regional distribution operation in Hanover County, VA, at a time when it is planning expansion in the south of its market area, including Virginia and North Carolina.
In 2020, Wegmans intends to open stores in Harrison, NY, West Cary, NC, and Tyson Corner, VA. Of 11 stores the company has set plans to open beyond those, seven are in North Carolina and Virginia.
Wegmans president and CEO, Colleen Wegman, noted, “This site has the right combination of everything we were looking for in terms of proximity to our stores and workforce and is located in a commonwealth that we have partnered with for many years. Once it’s up and running, this facility will allow us to deliver products to our southernmost stores with increased speed and freshness and will help support our growth well into the future.”
Wegmans operates 101 supermarkets, most with significantly extended general merchandise and food service offerings, in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts and North Carolina. Among those are its first New York City location, recently launched in Brooklyn. The company also is planning a Washington, DC, supermarket.
